Buffers & Reagents

Using the most stringent definition, a buffer is simply a solution used to prevent sudden changes in pH. However, in the biological sciences, the term buffer has come to mean much more. Most experimental biology involves manipulating a set of chemical reactions that underpin a biological state in vitro, and observing the outcome. All life is a synthesis of complex chemistry. As with any reaction, a given set of environmental conditions must be met before a reaction can occur. Commercial buffers for use in the life-sciences contain specific chemicals that facilitate a desired chemical reaction (e.g. enzyme cofactors, protein stabilizers, or carrier proteins). A buffer must be carefully chosen for a given application, based on individual requirements & criteria.

At genomics-online you will find molecular biology grade agarose as well, ideally suited for routine analysis of DNA or RNA by gel electrophoresis and blotting. The agarose can be purchased in convenient AgarTabs - provided as a tablet format (0,5g/tablet), you avoid tiresome weighing and moreover contamination during weighing. In order to stain the DNA or RNA to visualize them in agarose and polyacrylamide gels we offer several nucleic acid stains. The dyes eliminates the need for toxic Ethidium Bromide (EtBr, a potent mutagen), commonly used in gel electrophoresis.
