    Background

This gene encodes a DNA glycosylase involved in oxidative DNA damage repair. The enzyme excises adenine bases from the DNA backbone at sites where adenine is inappropriately paired with guanine, cytosine, or 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine, a major oxidatively damaged DNA lesion. The protein is localized to the nucleus and mitochondria. Mutations in this gene result in heritable predisposition to colon and stomach cancer. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008].Transcript Variant: This variant (beta3), also known as type 2, contains a distinct 5' UTR and uses an alternate in-frame splice site in the 5' coding region, compared to variant alpha5. These differences cause translation initiation at a downstream start codon and result in a protein (isoform 4) that is shorter than isoform 5. Variants beta3, gamma3 and beta5 encode the same isoform 4, which has been shown to localize to the nucleus.
