Background
- This gene encodes a ligand-activated transcription factor that shares structural features in common with nuclear hormone receptor family members. This protein functions as a receptor for bile acids, and when bound to bile acids, binds to DNA and regulates the expression of genes involved in bile acid synthesis and transport. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2016].Transcript Variant: This variant (4) contains an alternate 5' terminal exon, and uses an alternate in-frame donor splice site at an internal coding exon compared to variant 1. This results in translation initiation from an alternate in-frame start codon, and a longer isoform (4, also known as FXRbeta-) with a distinct N-terminus and missing a 4 aa protein segment compared to isoform 1.
