Background
- This gene encodes a member of the C-lectin family, proteins that possess collagen-like sequences and carbohydrate recognition domains. This protein is a scavenger receptor, a cell surface glycoprotein that displays several functions associated with host defense. It can bind to carbohydrate antigens on microorganisms, facilitating their recognition and removal. It also mediates the recognition, internalization, and degradation of oxidatively modified low density lipoprotein by vascular endothelial cells. [provided by RefSeq, Oct 2011].Transcript Variant: This variant (I) is shorter than variant II, however, it has a longer CDS and produces a longer isoform (I). The use of an alternative splice site results in the loss of 1596 nt compared to variant II. This loss shifts and extends the reading frame of variant I relative to variant II.
