Mammalian Expression Vectors
Mammalian expression vectors, like standard expression vectors, are used for horizontal gene transfer, but are specifically optimized for use in mammalian cells. While cloning vectors are primarily designed for replication – generating a large number of copies of the same plasmid – mammalian expression vectors contain additional regulatory elements required for efficient gene expression in eukaryotic systems.
In addition to the core components of a cloning vector, mammalian expression vectors include a strong eukaryotic promoter sequence (such as CMV or SV40) that recruits the host cell’s transcriptional machinery. This enables the host cell to transcribe an RNA template from the inserted gene. They may also contain enhancer elements, polyadenylation signals, and selectable markers suitable for mammalian cells.
